KOHIMA, 25 July 2010: The Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi has reached the capital of Nagaland, Kohima, after completing its journey to Arunachal Pradesh. In Kohima yesterday, the baton visited Naga Heritage Village, Kisama; World War II Museum and State Museum.

The baton also visited the Circuit House Cathedral for a photo opportunity. From there the baton proceeded onwards via New Minister Hill Jail and converged at PHQ Junction from where the relay mode began. The relay passed through the entire town stopping briefly for a photo session at the WWII Cemetery where the baton was received by Shri K. Kire, DGP, Nagaland. From there , it continued via TCP Gate and Razhu Point before reaching Local Ground and entering through Kuochiezie (south gate) where it was received by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Nagaland Shri Neiphiu Rio as the final Batonbearer for the day.

After the welcome ceremony, the relay was flagged off for Tuophema. On the way, there was a tree plantation drive undertaken at Capt. Kenguruse Memorial and then the baton moved towards Tuophema where it was received at the village gate by Tuophema Village Council. The convoy then moved to Dawho where a cultural extravaganza was organised.

At Tourist Resort, Tuophema an evening cultural celebration was organised. Shri Doshehe Y. Sema, Hon. Minister, Power & Election, Nagaland hosted dinner in baton’s honour.

Big names pull out won't affect Delhi Common Wealth Games 2010: Kalmadi

The government is worried about the pull out of star players from the Commonwealth Games [ Images ] but the Organising Committee (OC) says one or two withdrawals would not make any difference.

The Sports Ministry and the OC came out with completely contrasting viewpoints as Olympic [ Images ] Champions Usain Bolt [ Images ], Shelly-Ann Fraser and Chris Hoy announced that they will skip the October 3-14 Games.

Sports Minister M S Gill feels the Games would lose sheen if star players like Bolt would not compete but OC Chairman Suresh Kalmadi says it makes no difference if one or two players decide to miss it.

"We have read in paper this one is not coming, that one is not coming. Let me tell you that the biggest squad ever is coming from every country. Australia [ Images ] has confirmed 700 entries and England [ Images ] 500 which is highest ever.

"If one or two do not come, it does not matter. The Games will go on, the best of the world are coming and new champions will be created," Kalmadi said at the inauguration of the Swimming Complex.

However, Gill was very disappointed with the decision of the athletes and said he would ask CWG President Mike Fennell to bring those players to Games and would also raise the matter at the meeting of the Sports Ministers of the Commonwealth nations on October 4.

"Star athletes have slowly drifted away from the Games. It's not at all good. I want to tell Mr Fennell that don't bring your officials here but bring stars like Bolt, Fraser, Hoy and others with you.

"I'll raise this issue before them definitely. If these stars failed to turn up, then all our efforts stand waste. People would say that if only you and Suresh (Kalmadi) were to run then why you spent so much," Gill said.

New Delhi, July 7 (IANS) With less than three months to go for the Commonwealth Games, Australia and Britain have made a beeline for the counters as have African countries. About 17 lakh tickets are up for grabs, of which around 29,000 have been sold.

'Australia and England are the two countries which have bought the most number of tickets,' said a senior official of the Games organising committee.

According to the official, tickets worth Rs.7 crore have been sold through retail shops and online.

African nations have not disappointed either as there has been a 'great response' from countries like Tanzania, Namibia and Zambia. 'We are very satisfied,' the official added.

There are 71 countries participating in the Games scheduled Oct 3-14, of which 26 have an option to buy tickets from general sales agents. People in the remaining countries can buy tickets online by providing identity proofs.

Ticket sales in international markets began in November last year.

On the other hand, tickets in India are being sold at various retail shops, ticketing call centre 1800-200-1294 and also through the official website www.tickets.cwgdelhi2010.

The tickets are being sold at 12 retail shops in the national capital region (NCR), of which seven are Central Bank of India branches while the remaining five are Hero Honda showrooms. As many as 18 more outlets will be opened in the coming days, the official said.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been appointed as the official ticketing agency for the Games, while Broadway and Ticket Pro will manage the call centre and provide technical services.

To a question that tickets could be black marketed, the organising committee official said: 'There may be some cases of black marketing, but it is for Delhi Police to investigate. On our part, we have got the tickets printed on special paper at the Currency Note Press, Nashik, where Indian currency notes are printed.'

As of now, spectators buying tickets are provided with a confirmation voucher, which will be exchanged for actual tickets beginning Aug 1, when people can start getting actual tickets against every purchase.

From Oct 2, tickets can be bought at the Games venues too.

To avoid duplicate tickets, the paper has a bar code, an invisible logo of the Commonwealth Games, a security thread and other features which will make them impossible to replicate.

'Furthermore, the tickets will be exchanged with vouchers as late as possible, so that there is not much time to copy them. Moreover, only two tickets will be sold per person,' the official added.

While ticket prices for sporting events range from Rs.50 to Rs.1,000, those for the opening ceremony have been pegged from Rs.1,000 to Rs.50,000. The ticket prices for the closing ceremony is fixed between Rs.750 and Rs.50,000.

The official said each ticket holder can travel free of charge by Delhi Metro and government-run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses to reach and return from the venue on the day of the event.

Also, the Games ticket will have a map indicating approach roads, starting time, security procedures and dos and don'ts.

New Delhi: With barely 80 days to go for the Commonwealth Games, it's not just the venues, which are still racing towards completion, the delay in getting the stadiums may also affect India's medals tally in the Games.
After being delayed for almost a year, boxing stadium was one of the first venues to be finally handed over to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
The facilities will now be put through rigorous tests. That means Indian players will have only a few days to practice in the stadium before the Games in October.
Most other stadiums for the Games are near completion, and they are yet to be handed over.

For the past three years, New Delhi has been dressing itself up for the October Commonwealth Games by building new stadiums, roads, flyovers, colorful sidewalks, airport terminals and hotels. But the glitz and gleam of the breathless construction is leaving a long trail of forced evictions and displacement of the poor, joblessness, labor violation, environmental damage and massive cost overruns. NEW DELHI -- Rehman Khan's family cooks, eats and sleeps on a dirt tract beside a construction site. But he was not always homeless. His modest brick house in the heart of New Delhi was among those bulldozed a year ago to make way for an underpass that will link two stadiums during the Commonwealth Games in October.

The Games are New Delhi's showcase sporting event, one that officials hope will catapult the crowded, chaotic capital into the realm of a 21st-century supercity. In the past three years, the capital has been dressing itself up to welcome players from 71 nations and territories of the former British Commonwealth by building new stadiums, roads, flyovers, colorful sidewalks, airport terminals and hotels.

But the glitz and gleam of the construction are leaving a long trail of forced evictions and displacements, joblessness, labor law violations, environmental damage and huge cost overruns.

"For the 11-day Games event, the government demolished the lives we built here over 18 years," said Khan, a 58-year-old vegetable salesman, as he stared at the noisy construction site where his house once stood. "Poor people like us are inconvenient for their grand dreams. They treat us like flies in the tea cup, to be just picked and thrown away."

A chorus of critics is questioning the government's choice to spend billions of dollars on a one-time sporting extravaganza in a country where more than 370 million people live in poverty.

More than 100,000 families and about 300,000 street-cart vendors, rickshaw-pullers, corner shop owners and beggars have been evicted to beautify the streets for the Games, according to a report by the Housing and Land Rights Network, a think tank. The report said the budget allocation from the youth and sports ministry for the Games has risen about 62 times since 2005. Although the official cost estimate is $2.2 billion, the report estimates it to be at least three times that much.

Sidewalks across the capital are being repaved for the Games, medians re-laid, shiny granite tiles installed at shopping centers and imported grass planted in the central shopping arcade. The construction work has attracted hundreds of thousands of migrant laborers from impoverished villages across the country.

"The Games will help the government turn its nose up in pride, but what about us?" said Ram Kishan, a gardener whose house was knocked down.

Dunu Roy, director of Hazards Centre, an advocacy group that has campaigned against the elaborate preparation for the Games, said that "overnight, the working-class people have been branded encroachers and presented as a liability in the city. . . . The legacy of the Games will be a deeply polarized society."

But officials say the Games have been important to India's development.

"Our workers have gained valuable construction skills with modern machinery that will come handy as Indian urbanizes more and more. Our Public Works Department, which was known for chronic project delays, has learned an important lesson in the art of finishing things in time," said Rakesh Mehta, Delhi's chief secretary. "We have been cautious about demolishing settlements of the poor, but many were unavoidable."

He said the Games would leave a lasting legacy of bike paths, wider roads and buses that are accessible for the disabled. The completion of Delhi's gleaming new subway system was also speeded up in anticipation of the Games. But citizen groups say the legacy also includes a huge debt, rising prices and social conflict.

Environmentalists are also up in arms over a luxury condominium building for foreign athletes that has been built in the flood plain of the already thinning Yamuna River. They say the condominium will restrain the river and choke the flow of the groundwater channels that replenish it.

A February report by a Delhi High Court-appointed committee said that workers at the Games sites earned inadequate wages, worked in unsafe and unhygienic conditions, received no health benefits or safety gear, and lived in run-down shelters. Some sites employ child laborers, the report said.

"In its last-minute hurry to meet deadlines, the government is flouting all labor laws and endangering the workers' lives," said Amjad Hassan, general secretary of the Delhi Unorganized Construction Workers Union. "Most of these workers are given cheap plastic helmets in the name of safety. No gloves, no protective eyeglasses, safety belt or boots. Accidents are frequent. Almost 100 people died since 2007 at these Games construction sites."

Mehta, the city's chief secretary, said workers "are given shelters near the site, are given full safety gear and paid adequately."

On a recent morning, 12-year-old Mukesh Kumar sat huddled with teenage migrant workers eating rice and lentils under a makeshift tent at a work site.

"We work all night widening the roads," Kumar said. "If we do this well, we will find more work in other important projects. There is nothing in my village to go back to."

World 800m champion Caster Semenya will miss the African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, at the end of the month because she is not yet ready to race at international level.

Athletics South Africa said Semenya was left out of the 42-member team for the continental championships named on Sunday following consultation between the national federation and Semenya's coach, Michael Seme. The African Championships start in Nairobi on July 28.

Semenya was cleared to run by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) earlier this week after a probe into her gender prevented her from racing for 11 months.

The 19 year old, who has not raced since winning the world title in August 2009, is set to return to the track at a meeting in Finland on Thursday.

“Semenya will work towards reaching peak condition in order to be a part of the action at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, in October,” ASA said in a statement.

The national federation said they would assist her in “obtaining race opportunities as part of her preparations for the international event”.

Seme said he wasn't expecting her to clock spectacular times when she returns to the track because she hasn't raced in 11 months.

“She is going to run some small meetings in Europe, but we are not expecting fast times yet,” he said.

New Delhi: Come September and you will just have to dial 111 to lodge a complaint against a tout or an auto driver who is overcharging you or for that matter to know about city hotels and tourist places.

"Keeping the Commonwealth Games in mind, Delhi government is coming out with a helpline to address complaints as well as
disseminate basic information about the city," said a senior
tourism ministry official.

Besides providing details about Games schedules, stadia, cultural events, hotels and other tourism-related information,
the helpline will also have data about various departments of
the city government and its e-governance programme.

"We have asked the concerned authorities to allot the number 111 as the helpline number," said a senior Delhi government official dealing with the project.

Information and Technology department of Delhi government is currently working out details to make the helpline operational before the Commonwealth Games.

Terming the helpline project as unique, the official said, "We have finalised the tendering process and the request for proposal (RFP) will be floated shortly for the project. The response was good during the pre-bid tendering meeting."

The helpline service will continue even after the Commonwealth Games.

"Since it has been devised to help the common man of the city find solution to many problems taking several aspects of the government's functioning into account, the helpline service will continue after the Games," the official said.

About one lakh tourists are expected to visit the city during the Games beginning October 3.

Tourism ministry had undertaken training programmes for
immigration officials, auto and taxi drivers, guest house owners and its staff for the Games.

New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games Federation, which had earlier expressed grave concerns over Delhi's preparations for the October Commonwealth Games, is now much more positive about the authorities delivering the event to the world on time.

The Games are just three months away, and, three crucial venues are still not ready, but the mood among the organizers is upbeat.

''We have given out brickbats when they have been deserved on the progress of the venues, but perhaps it's time to give out a bouquet, because we are really impressed by the amount of work that has been done in the past couple of months,'' Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Mike Hooper told The Age.

Delhi had promised most facilities for the Games would be finished by the end of last year. That deadline was extended to March 31, then June 30.

Three pivotal projects - the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the aquatic complex and the athletes' village - all missed last week's target. But organisers say the buildings are ''99 per cent'' finished.

''We are not going to worry about a week or two. It would have been nice had the venues been completed earlier … but from an operational point of view will the venues be able to be used for their purpose? The answer is yes,'' Hooper said.

More than 20 new infrastructure projects across Delhi are due to be finished before the Games, including a major expansion of the city's metro rail network.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium, the Delhi University rugby sevens stadium and the National Stadium for hockey are all open-air venues.

Several running and cycling events will be held on roads. A series of outdoor public events to coincide with Delhi's much-anticipated sporting extravaganza could also be affected by the weather.

Organisers, however, said that they are keeping their fingers crossed.

New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games face a threat from Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba and other militant outfits, which, according to a US think-tank, may be planning an attack during the event.

Vice-president of Tactical Intelligence, Stratfor, Scott Stewart replied in affirmative when asked whether the sporting
event scheduled in October faces any terror threat.

"Yes. Two days after the February 13, 2010 blast in Pune, Ilyas Kashmiri (wanted al-Qaeda terrorist) threatened the Field Hockey World Cup, the Indian Premier League cricket competition and the Commonwealth Games," Stewart said.

In support of his claims, the Stratfor analyst quoted a warning of "continue attacks all across India until the Indian
army leaves Kashmir" posted by Kashmiri via the Asia Times Online on February 13 this year.

In his message, Kashmiri had also warned the world against sending participants to upcoming global sporting events —- including the Field Hockey World Cup, the Indian Premier League international cricket competition and the Commonwealth Games -- to be held in India this year.

"If you are a militant group planning an attack, the last thing you want to do is to provide a distinct warning and place the security forces on high alert.

"... There are, however, many different militant outfits (such as the LeT) that have an interest in hitting India and it is possible that one of them may be planning something," Stewart said.

He, however, added, "Again, we would not expect to hear a threat from a group that was planning an attack, especially
the closer we edge to the event they want to attack. They would be very quiet.

"Publicised threat statements made by militants are not a reliable way to judge the true threat to an event," said the Stratfor analyst.

Over 70 countries are likely to participate in the mega sporting event scheduled from October 3-14 this year.

NEW DELHI: It's the first mini-forest within the city and you can thank the Commonwealth Games 2010 for it.
The Delhi government is greening the ITO Chungi with over 8,000 trees for the Games the first such large concentration of greens in Delhi outside a city forest. The greening initiative will see the forest department plant both ornamental and native trees around the five loops along ITO Chungi as well as bamboo trees along the verges (identified as parts by the forest department). Around 3,000 bamboo trees of different species are planned to be planted.
The greening of the area, spread over 30 acres, is expected to go a long way towards compensating the large-scale cutting of trees that had taken place on the Yamuna riverbed when ITO Chungi came up. The area, which is being described as an urban forest, will be planted not only with native trees but also marigold shrubs, so as to highlight the ornamental aspect as well. Said KK Sharma, principal secretary (PWD), "We've been looking at greening flyovers, specially those with loops, as they are built over a large area. For this project, we had asked the consultants to suggest a substantial green cover as the diameter is quite big (at ITO Chungi).'' According to Sharma, the consultants suggested an urban forest, which was implemented by the forest department thereafter.
The plans are certainly ambitious. Senior forest department officials explained that while the loops would have 1,000 trees each, planted in concentric circles, the verges would be planted with bamboo trees. "The first ring in the loops would be a row of mixed trees trumpet tree, washingtonia, lagerestroemia. The next row would be of one type of tree amaltas, baheta, sheesham, jamun, neem, pilkhan, bakain, semal, arjun,'' said the official. The bamboo borders along the verges will be of three types yellow (vulgaris), green and the Buddha belly bamboo. Around 3,000 bamboo trees will be planted along the parts.
The good news is that work on the urban forest had started earlier in March this year. According to officials of the forest department, over 60% of the work has been completed so far. Said the official, "The length of the trees at present has been kept at 7-8 feet. These trees will take a little bit of time to grow and the full green effect will be visible only after the monsoon.''
The greening comes at a time when the government has been much criticized for the rampant mowing down of trees in the name of development for the upcoming Delhi Games 2010. While many trees were cut during the construction of ITO Chungi, around 700 were cut during construction at Siri Fort sports complex. A few hundred were also cut at Delhi University, again for the Games.

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to secure the Commonwealth Games Village, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday razed a school on the Yamuna Khadar, right behind the Akshardham Temple. The school catered to about 180 children of farmers and labourers working in and around the river bed.
Parminder Kaur Somal, who started the school four years back and was teaching here said, DDA had given them no prior notice and arrived with their bulldozers around noon. "The classes were in progress when the DDA team, accompanied by police personnel, arrived at the school. They gave us three hours to clear out and then brought the building down. One official also said if we would furnish an affidavit saying the school would only be reopened after the Games, it could be spared but what could we have done in three hours,'' she said.
While officials maintained the building was totally illegal and no structures were permitted on the river bed, those associated with the school pointed out that compared to the number of unauthorized structures that had come up on the river bed, many of them with the sanction of the government, this was only providing education to poor children who otherwise would never be able to afford going to school. "The government should have thought about giving the children an alternative space at least. If we had known about their plans to demolish the structure any earlier, we could have tried moving out to another place,'' said Somal.
She said eight acres land had been leased to the Delhi Peasant Society in 1949 for a period of 99 years and they had a stay order from the high court prohibiting any further construction in the area. "We have been running classes from nursery to V. Some children who passed out from here have also joined MCD schools. We were working with eight teachers and some volunteers. Now the children have again been left high and dry. We can't imagine what security threat they could have posed to the Games Village,'' said Somal.

New Delhi: For the Commonwealth Games, while the police and paramilitary forces focus on high threats such as an aerial bomb attack or sabotage, private security agencies are expected to monitor traffic, attend to parking woes and manage crowds at the various venues.

These agencies are gearing up to match international standards by supplementing manpower base, conducting specialised event security training and engaging foreign experts.

According to Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI), the Delhi government is in the process of finalising the requirement and accordingly the roles and duties of private security agencies would be defined at an appropriate time.

"In Delhi, there are around 3 lakh security personnel working in private agencies.

We will provide security to all the civil establishments built especially for the Commonwealth Games," Kunwar Vikram Singh, Chairman, CAPSI told PTI adding that they have already provided the names of 27 selected agencies to the government.

Major buyers boosting demand during CWG 2010 would be CWG Organising Committee, venue owners, hotels, malls, movie theatres, tourist attractions like ASI monuments and museums, he says.

Private agency officials say the threat perception in India would be much bigger when compared to CWG 2006 in Melbourne as the number of athletes, organisers, spectators and general public is expected to surpass than the one in Australia.

"We have added additional 5000 security personnel in Delhi to meet the requirements and signed an MoU with an event security specialist company from Australia to develop and deliver specialist training to our security personnel," says Rituraj Sinha, COO, Security and Intelligence Services (SIS).

He adds, "We would also be bringing experts having past experience of handling Sydney Olympics and Melbourne Commonwealth Games."

According to SIS, the Games related activities are expected to add an additional business of Rs 300- Rs 350 crores in business revenue for the Indian security industry that is currently estimated at around Rs 10,000 crores.

"There is nothing from the government but a few private entities have contacted us to help them out in their mega events connected with CWG during the period," says Mansi Gupta, VP-Marketing, G4S India, a leading private security agency in the capital.

Rajiv Mathur, Director, Vision Secure Technologies, says, "Regular training courses are being conducted for security personnel to improve language and soft skills. We have also engaged international experts, foreign methodology and training techniques to match up to the international standards of security."

According to a rough estimates by an industry insider, the Delhi police and venue owners would be installing over 5000 security cameras for surveillance purposes.

"Over 1000 metal detectors and 200 baggage X-ray machines will also be used," he says.

Mathur adds, "Integration of various security systems like CCTV and communications medium is being done at the Central Control Room, smart cards for identification of players and visitors are being prepared, video images from a flying balloon would be installed at stadiums and venues."

After the Mumbai terror strikes in 2008 and the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, security for the sporting event which would feature athletes from over 71 nations will be of a grave concern, says a senior Delhi police official.

An international invitational weightlifting event (July 14 to 16), a Federation Cup cycling event (July 23 to 25), an international swimming meet (July 27 to 31) and an Asian all-star athletics meet (July 29 and 30) are all expected to be postponed because different venues are still not ready.

All venues were scheduled to be completed by June 30 and the officials had been claiming all along that if at all this latest deadline would be missed, it would be only by some days. It is learnt that the venues are still running behind schedule and with less than three months left for the CWG to start, it will be another setback.

“It is not yet clear when these venues will be fit to hold competitions. The rains, too, are likely to have a direct or indirect bearing on the progress,” said an official.

All these events are already behind time, what with the deadlines for sports venues being revised time and again. An Asian youth netball meet, currently on in the environment friendly Thyagaraj Stadium, might remain the only test event scheduled for July to be held as planned.

The athletics and weightlifting events will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex, which will also be the venue for the CWG opening and closing ceremonies.

The Indira Gandhi Stadium complex is being prepared for weightlifting and cycling, while the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee complex is being readied for swimming.

‘Commonwealth Express’ arrived at Lucknow on Thursday.

Heralding the arrival of the Queen’s Baton, the ‘Commonwealth Express’ chugged into Charbagh Railway Station on Thursday, in all its lush green splendour. The stage was thus set for the Queen’s Baton Relay which arrives in the state capital at 4.15 am (at Itaunja) on Friday.

The Commonwealth Express— a special train to promote the Commonwealth Games to be organised in Delhi from October 3 to 14—will be open to public from 10.00 am on Friday on platform no. 8. Kirti Mishra, divisional sports secretary, Northern Railway, informed that the exhibition train will be open to public from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm on July 9 and 10, before leaving Lucknow for Allahabad.

Since the Commonwealth Games 2010 have been announced as ‘green games’, the colour for the train is just the right hue. The coaches of the train have information pertaining to Commonwealth Games and sports and also on information technology. Each coach announces the fast approaching Commonwealth Games in bold letters. On the front of the coaches, there are figures of athletes participating in different sports and the developments made in the field of information technology. To look after the security aspect of the train, GRP, RPF and PAC personnel have been deployed near the train.

School kids become messengers of Delhi 2010’s Green theme as OC celebrates the Earth Day

NEW DELHI, 22 April 2010: On the occasion of the Earth Day, the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi organised “Waste to Craft” Competition with participation 107 students from 27 eco-clubs schools, forming 42 teams, from across the Delhi National Capital Region.

The event gave wings to the imagination of school kids and they enthusiastically crafted different creative items from the waste. All crafted items had an underlying green theme. In his message to the kids, OC CWG Delhi 2010 chairman Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP said, “The Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi is totally committed to its vision of making it the first ever Green Commonwealth Games. Our vision is to strive towards reducing the carbon footprint and become a benchmark for all mutli-disciplinary Games in the future.” He also gave the slogan of - pedh hai to sher hai, pedh hai to shehar hai aur pedh hai to Shera hai – underling the importance of trees.

The competition was held between 10 AM to 1 PM at the OC CWG Delhi 2010 headquarters saw encouraging response from children as all of them worked hard to impress the judges. The main objective of the competition was to sensitise young children on the importance of natural resources and waste minimisation and to promote the cause of Green Games. The event was successful in its endeavour as students echoed similar sentiments. Rishabh Sharma, who also won second prize for his creative craft, from Modern School said, “This is an extremely good step to promote re-use of the waste into useful articles. Moreover, we have been encouraged not to pollute our mother Earth and remake eco-friendly goods instead of wasting them.”

Archana Anand, another participant from Delhi Tamil Education Association School, Mandir Marg supported Delhi 2010’s Green theme and appealed Delhiites to make the city clean. She said, “Commonwealth Games is about uniting people from different countries together and make India proud. I request people of Delhi to keep their neighbourhood and the city neat and clean so that the visitors from different countries feel pleased and help in spreading Delhi’s image around the world.”

The winners of the competition were announced later in the day at the Delhi Secretariat Auditorium. The ceremony included a prize distribution function for the winners and had the esteemed presence of the Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit; Secretary of Delhi, Mr. Rakesh Mehta; Secretary, Department of Environment, Mr. Dharmendra along with other dignitaries.

The winners were:

First Prize – Pooja, Neha, Sneha and Babita from Sarvodhya Kanya Vidhyalya, West Patel Nagar

Second Prize – Rishabh Arora from Modern School, Barakhamba Road

Third Prize – Siddhi Gupta, Mehak Sodhi, Harnoor Makkar and Tanvi Raina from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Bangla Sahib Marg

Apart from this five other teams won consolation prizes.

Green Games Kiosk at 52 Annual Flower show XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi

The XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi is conducting mass green sensitisation activities to create eco- consciousness among the citizens of Delhi. To drive home the message of environment consciousness before the Games, a Green Games Kiosk was setup at the 52 Annual Flower Show.
Delhi University organises lower Show every year to promote interest in environment among the students. This year, the 52 Annual Flower Show was held on 26 February 2010, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm in the lawns of Mughal Garden in front of Vice-Chancellor’s Office, University of Delhi. The “Annual Flower Show” is Delhi’s oldest and most prominent flower show; where in an exhibition of different varieties of flowers from across India along with other eco-friendly products are showcased.
The Sustainability and Environment functional area of the OC CWG Delhi 2010, also participated to showcase the green initiatives undertaken / planned for ensuring Green Commonwealth Games in Delhi through its green games kiosk. The event was also graced by the presence Hon’ble, Minister of Sports, Education and Transport, Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely, who was the chief guest. He encouraged the student to “save environment as that’s the need of the hour”.
To spread the eco-consciousness among the students of Delhi University, a “Make it Alive” competition was organised where the citizens and students were encouraged to adopt sustainable lifestyle. Hundreds of students, university faculty and citizen of Delhi pledged to save the environment. Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi committed towards ensuring zero carbon footprint

NEW DELHI 17 February 2010: The landmark ecological code for the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, which aims to ensure reasonable consumption of electricity and water in all the stadiums, was unveiled today.

Releasing the ecological code along with Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi Organising Committee, said, “this measure would go a long way to limit the carbon footprint in Delhi and would strive to make the XIX Commonwealth Games pollution free.”

Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Chairman, Green Games Sub-committee OC, CWG Delhi 2010 also acknowledged the Organising Committee 2010 Delhi initiative to launch the drive towards green games concept, educating people and creating awareness for environmental protection.

Speaking at the milestone achievement, Mr. Kalmadi, said, “Releasing of the code is the first step towards ensuring that we are successful in our mission of conducting the first ever green games in the history of the Commonwealth Games.”

The Organising Committee is deeply and passionately committed towards preserving and restoring the environment and establishing a benchmark for low carbon sporting events and will be successful in showcasing Delhi 2010 as sustainable “Green Games”, added Mr. Kalmadi.

In his concluding remark, Mr. Kalmadi, gently reminded everyone on the importance of preserving our environment, he said, “ Paidh Hai to Sher Hai”.

Smt. Dikshit, Delhi Chief Minister stated that “all stadia are being constructed to ensure reasonable consumption of electricity and water in stadia during the games.” “There is also focus on bio-diverse plantation to offset the carbon footprint”, she added.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor, reiterated that the XIX Commonwealth Games would be the “greenest Commonwealth Games ever.” He further went on to add that “the games would leave a legacy beyond roads and infrastructure; one of greater consciousness of the environment.”

New Delhi, 22 March 2010: Marking the World Forestry Day on March 21, Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi celebrated the “200 Days To Go” for the Games with the ‘Green’ theme.

The event was organised on a bright and sunny spring day in the lawns of India Gate. The participants enthusiastically celebrated the biggest milestone of the Games till date and it was an instant success. As the first ever Green Games, the ‘200 Days to Go’ celebrations of Delhi 2010 was a preview of the green initiatives taken up.

Every year, on 21 March, World Forestry Day is celebrated across the globe for the last 30 years to aware people about the importance of forests and its multiple benefits. The celebration of the milestone of the Green Games had a green flavor. There was an overwhelming response from the visitors that was evident from the crowd at the kiosk set up by the Sustainability and Environment FA of OC CWG Delhi 2010 for saplings distribution. As many as 1500 saplings were distributed amongst the visitors in jute bags. The jute bags were also distributed with an objective to promote the use of eco-friendly material over the plastic bags.

The objective of the plants distribution campaign was to encourage the citizens of Delhi to adopt a plant and to nurture it. The campaign actively involved the general public to prevent the depletion of forests and to expand the existing ones for future generations. The species distributed during the ceremony mainly consisted of the indigenous species such as Mangifera indica, Callistemon, Syzygiam cumini, Acacia nilotica and various other kitchen garden plants.

Keeping up with the Green theme of the Delhi 2010, the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi (OC CWG Delhi 2010) today organised Sustainable Transport Rally comprising of eco-friendly means of transport like cycles and electric (battery running) cars and scooters.

Almost 200 enthusiasts from all walks of life, young and old participated in the 8 km long rally. Cycle rally was flagged off by Shera, the Games mascot, from the OC CWG Delhi 2010 Headquarters and the other rally comprising of electric vehicles started from Delhi Chief Minister Mrs. Sheila Dikshit’s residence. Mrs Dikshit herself drove an electric car Reva. Apart from the Cheif Minister, Mrs. Kiran Walia, Health Minister of Delhi. Mr. R. K. Pachauri, MD, TERI, Mr. Parimal Rai, Chairman , NDMC, Mr. P. K. Tripathi, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Mr. V. K. Verma, DG of the OC CWG Delhi 2010 participated in the Rally. Both rallies culminated at Commonwealth Gardens in Africa Avenue, Chanakyapuri where the Chief Minister and other guests planted a sapling in the Commonwealth Garden.

Speaking on the occasion Mrs Dikshit said we need to spend our natural resources wisely as there are many species but only one Earth. She lauded the efforts of children, RWAs, women organisations and NGOs to make Delhi one of the greenest cities in India and in the world.

“Delhi is one of the largest cities. We need to strike a balance between the huge, rising population and the natural resources and spend them wisely. Almost 42% of the clean, fresh water available to Delhi is wasted, we must change our habits. Fuel consumption is another reason for environmental pollution hence battery run vehicles are an option. We must have courage to demand clean fuel so that companies provide us the same.”

Mr. Pachauri said, “It is heartening to see many young people today turning up to protect environment. We must work together to make sure that we bring prosperity for all.”

Mr. Verma said OC CWG Delhi 2010 is committed make Delhi 2010 the first ever Green Games. Delhi Government’s initiative for clean transport like Metro, Cycling tracks for cyclists, etc., are playing huge role in improving Delhi’s air quality.

XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi’s Green Games Pledge at the Greenathon

The Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi has committed itself towards hosting Delhi 2010 as the first ever “Green Games”. In order to realise this, it has taken upon a Green Games Vision whereby it would ‘strive towards reducing the carbon footprints and become the benchmark for the multi-disciplinary games in the future’. The OC CWG Delhi 2010 chairman was also present at the “Greenathon”, one of the major green events organised by the NDTV which includes extensive clean-up drives across the country, movie screenings, painting competitions, sapling distribution, music concerts and many other environmental initiatives.

One of the highlights of the Greenathon was an interview with the Chairman, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP. He was accompanied by Indian National hockey squad capt. Mr. Rajpal Singh and other members of the team including Mr. Prabhjot Singh, Mr. Sandeep Singh. The Games mascot -Shera’s was also present. Mr. Kalmadi recounted the Green achievements of the Delhi 2010 in areas of green infrastructure, green hospitality, greening and offset, green sensitisation, green procurement and waste management. On specific measures undertaken to ensure green games, Mr. Kalmadi highlighted some of the initiatives undertaken to achieve the target of first ever green games like energy efficient fixtures and solar based external lighting at competition venues; rainwater harvesting at most of the competition venues; promotion of sustainable means of public transport, use of eco-friendly construction material like fly ash bricks. With regard to greening and offset, Mr. Kalmadi added that 3 new city forests would be dedicated to the upcoming Commonwealth Games by GNCTD. Planting of 3.3 Lakh trees is proposed in the GNCTD; in addition, extensive plantation drive would be done along the domestic route of the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi.

Hamirpur: After paying obeisance at the famous 'Mata Jawalamukhi Shakti Peeth', where Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shri Ramesh Dhawala welcomed the Relay and was the frontrunner alongwith the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) of XIX common Wealth Games, 2010, it reached Hamirpur today, where it was greeted with great enthusiasm and was accorded the traditional welcome by Deputy Commissioner Shri Abhishek Jain, Superintendent of Police Shri Kuldeep Sharma, Chairman, Municipal Committee, Shri Deep Chand including National and International sports figures, Office bearers of Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association ( HPOA), prominent citizens and thousands of children en-route Hamirpur on both side of the road waving Tricolour.

Education Minister, Shri Ishwar Dass Dhiman, who was the Chief Guest, received the Queen’s Baton Relay at Boys school, near bus stand Hamirpur together with Irrigation and Public Health Minister, Shri Ravinder Singh Ravi. The Minister in his inaugural address said that it was like a dream come true for the people of the Country as well as Himachal Pradesh who got an opportunity to carry the Queen’s Baton in their homeland. It was a matter of immense delight that after entering the Indian province at Wagah border, our State was the fourth in a row after Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Chandigarh who had the privilege of welcoming Queen’s Baton, adding that Himachal is the only State where Queen’s Baton stay is one of the longest for three days covering seven out of twelve districts.

He said that the state had produced sportsperson of repute who had excelled in various disciplines and represented India at National and International- level. As many as seven Arjuna awardees of different disciplines who belonged to Himachal Pradesh. We are proud to celebrate the achievement of one of the biggest sports extravaganza in our country which had provided an opportunity to the players of the State to associate themselves with the Common Wealth Games.

Earlier the QBR was taken from Government Degree College to the boys senior secondary school ground by ace runners which included National-level athlete and Gold medallist Ms Pushpa Thakur, International Volley Ball players Sh.Hem Singh and Sh. Manoj Kumar, Basket Ball player, Sh. Suresh Kumar, National level Judo player and Parshuram Awardee Ms Nutan Pathania representative of Hero Honda, Sh Virendar and International Volleyball Player Sh. In this regard the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2010 Common Wealth Games (CWG) reached Srinagar on Tuesday. The Queen's Baton was taken to the famous Nishat Gardens where sportspersons of the Kashmir valley were present.

Covering more than 1, 70000 kms and 70 nations and starting the 100-day countdown to this year's Commonwealth Games, the Queen's Baton Relay arrived in India from Pakistan through the historic Wagah Border (Amritsar) on Friday, 25 June 2010 and would now travel all Indian states before reaching Delhi.

“We are carrying a message of peace and harmony. After all, sporting activities have no borders, no religion, and no nationality. It’s just pure...promoting tolerance, camaraderie and accommodation. That's the message we are carrying," said Lieutenant General (retired) Raj Khadyan, head of the Queens Baton Relay Run,in India said, while talking to media at Srinagar.

It is highly ironical to note that on the day of the arrival of queen’s baton to Kashmir valley, the situation in Kashmir was highly volatile on account of a wave of teenager killings allegedly by security forces and as a matter of fact even on the day of its arrival, three teenagers were shot dead allegedly by security forces in South Kashmir .The overall situation and mood on ground zero suggests that its arrival had very little meaning or significance for common masses.

Ghulam Muhammad, a commoner said, “India is going to conduct a gala mega event this year in form of the Common Wealth Games, but its policy in Kashmir is totally outdated as suppressing and killing young teenagers has become a norm out here. We have no interest in these games as we stress on Indian leadership to address the Kashmir Issue as quickly as possible”.

NEW DELHI: The humongous new Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport that opens on July 3 will have all the amenities for passenger travel comfort, including the highest number of aerobridges in the world at a single site - 78. It is almost eight times more than what the present international terminal has.
Apart from the aerobridges which are passageways that connect the boarding area directly to the aircraft, Terminal 3 will also have 63 elevators, nearly 35 escalators and 92 automatic walkways.
The aerobridges are designed to handle 600 passengers an hour. The present international terminal has only 10 aerobridges, one escalator and no automatic walkway.
The aerobridges at the new terminal have been designed to support the gigantic Airbus A-380 aircraft, touted as the largest such machine for commercial aviation, said the developers of this $2.8 billion terminal -- the Delhi Airport International Ltd (DIAL).
Also integrated into the system are multiple aircraft ramp systems to accommodate larger aircraft like Boeing 747, 777 and Airbus A340.
"It is estimated that over 90 per cent of the passengers at Terminal 3 will be serviced through the 78 aerobridges that have come up here," a senior DIAL official said requesting anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
"It is notable that T3 will have the most number of aerobridges in the world at a single terminal of this size," the official said, adding: "Only the Changi airport at Singapore comes close with 64 aerobridges."
Led by Bangalore-based infrastructure major GMR Group, DIAL is a joint venture among Airports Authority of India, Fraport of Germany and Malaysian Airport Holdings.
The airport authorities have designed the airport for both domestic and international passengers -- though for the domestic sector it will not be for use by travellers by budget airlines, which already have an upgraded terminal.
The developers commissioned Shinmaywa of Japan and ThyssenKrupp of Germany to install the 78 aerobridges. These have been constructed within some two-and-a-half years, the officials explained.
According to DIAL officials, three gateways are dedicated for use by A380 aircraft with three aerobridges. In addition, six contact parking gateways and three remote parking gateways can also be used to cater to this large aircraft.
"The A380 has double deck configuration and quite a sizeable passenger load. It requires special aerobridges to allow fast embarkation and disembarkation. This is necessary to ensure turnaround times," said an official involved with the project.
"This facility is going to be used for the first time in India."

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) The new domestic terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport will start commercial operations April 19, it was announced Tuesday.
Built at a cost of Rs.500 crore ($100 million), the terminal will be able to handle 10 million passengers annually and is equipped with 72 check-in counters, its developers said.

The new terminal, called 1D, has been built by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) - a joint venture between the state-run Airports Authority of India and a consortium led by the Bangalore-based infrastructure major GMR.

Jet Airways, Kingfisher, SpiceJet, IndiGo JetLite and Kingfisher Red are among the scheduled domestic carriers that will operate from terminal ID. Currently these airlines operate from terminal 1B.

The new terminal 1D was earlier inaugurated Feb 26 by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel.

DIAL officials said hectic trials are going on before terminal 1D becomes fully operational from April 19. Similar trials have been going on for over four months.

“Our staff from all areas of operations have been exposed to the new working environment, baggage handling, IT systems and the processes required for day-to-day operations,” said an official.

While all scheduled carriers like Air India, Kingfisher and Jet Airways will shift to the upcoming T3 integrated terminal that is scheduled to be completed by the end of this fiscal, all low-cost carriers - will continue to operate from 1D.

New Delhi, June 23 (IANS) The sparkling new terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, touted among the largest and most modern in the world, will start international operations July 14 and domestic services 16 days later, it was announced Wednesday.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, along with National Advisory Council chair Sonia Gandhi and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, will formally inaugurate what is officially called the Terminal 3 building that can cater to 34 million passengers annually.

The total capacity of the existing international terminal is less than 15 million.

Officials with the Delhi International Airport Ltd, the terminal’s developer’s, who took the media for a sneak preview Wednesday, said the new infrastructure will be a welcome change from the worn-down international terminal passengers currently have to endure.

“Going by the sheer number of aerobridges alone, you can tell the difference,” said an official, making it clear that he was not authorised to speak with the media. “The international terminal used now has just 10 aerobridges, this one has 78.”

The ride from the Centaur Hotel in the vicinity to the new terminal had several pleasant sights - tall palm trees along the driveway, exotic foliage, colourful flowering plants, including orchids. “We have imported some of these from Mexico, Thailand and Gulf.”

Inside the airport, too, for those used to present international airport, the settings appear truly global. It has that touch of sophistication that one finds in some of the most modern airports in the world.

The check-ins, too, will be faster. With 168 check-in counters and 95 immigration desks both boarding the aircraft and getting out of the airport will be much faster, said the official, adding this process should not take more than 45 minutes at the outer limit.

The terminal has two piers, one each for international and domestic operations spanning 1.2 km from one end to the other. To cover the distances 63 elevators, 35 escalators and 92 automatic walkways will be pressed into service, officials said.

“This is work of over 30,000 workmen, engineers, architects and professionals from India and around 300 from abroad. They took just 37 months to achieve what had taken a whole of five years for building the new terminals at Beijing and London.”

The developers are led by the Bangalore-based infrastructure major GMR Group, with the state-run Airports Authority of India, Fraport of Germany and Malaysian Airport Holding as members of the consortium.

They claim that the new terminal will be the sixth largest in the world — after those at Dubai, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok and Mexico City. It is a super-structure spread over 5.4 million sq ft, to give an experience of a city within, they added.

Another first for India will be the usage of in-line baggage handling system that will eliminate the need for passengers to get their luggage screened through x-ray machines before approaching the counter. Five levels of screening would have happened by then.

“The new system can handle around 12,800 bags per hour. It has a unique technology to detect explosives to ensure quicker processing and higher security. The baggage system also has 6.4 km of conveyor belts to deliver the baggage,” said the official.

Once the check-in and baggage formalities are complete, the terminal offers travellers a wide variety of shopping experience - it has 20,000 sq meters of retail area, including a large food court stocked with the best in Indian and global cuisine.

And at the backdrop of these large expanses are 100,000 sq ft of curtains imported from China, 110,000 sq mts of granite flooring from Bahrain and exotic plants and decorative art work depicting the signs used in Indian dance forms.

The developers have also kept in mind those who come to receive and see off passengers. The terminal has a multi-layer parking facility, also one of the first of its kinds in the country, that can accommodate 4,300 cars, with clear instructions on the slots.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday inaugurated a glitzy new terminal - the sixth largest and among the most modern in the world - at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, which built in a record 37 months at the cost of nearly $3 billion.

The actual operations though will start July 16 for international services while that for the domestic sector, for non-budget carriers, starts 16 days later, the developers of what is called Terminal 3 said at the grand opening.
Among those at the inaugural event were National Advisory Council chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and GM Rao, chairman of the GMR Group, which led the consortium that built the terminal.
"Today is a special occasion for our country. We are all very happy and proud of the completion of one of the world's largest airport terminals in a record 37 months," the Prime Minister told the well-attended opening ceremony.

"This airport terminal establishes new global benchmarks. It exemplifies out country's resolve to bridge the infrastructure deficit in our country. It also proves the success of public-private partnership," he said. "We have proved the sceptics wrong."
According to the Prime Minister, as many as 58 government agencies were involved in coordinating the efforts to build the airport. He took the opportunity to congratulate each and every artisan, technician and worker involved in the project.
The Prime Minister said it was noteworthy that India was today the ninth largest aviation market, with 10 scheduled airlines, as opposed to just two in 1990.
He said the total fleet size of scheduled carriers had also grown four-fold to 400 aircraft.
Going forward, he said the country's commercial aviation industry had the potential to absorb up to $120 billion in investment by 2020 and the capacity to handle some 160-180 million domestic passengers and 50 million from overseas.
The developers of the new terminal - the Delhi International Airport Ltd - said the new facility can handle 34 million passengers per annum in the first phase of development, against less than 10 million passengers at present at the international terminal.
They said the new terminal will be the sixth largest in the world - after those at Dubai, Beijing, Singapore, Bangkok and Mexico City.
It is a super-structure spread over 5.4 million sq ft, to give an experience of a city within, they added.
The airport's developers are led by the Bangalore-based infrastructure major GMR Group, with the state-run Airports Authority of India, Fraport of Germany and Malaysian Airport Holding as members of the consortium.
Some of the key features of the new terminal are:

-One pier each for international and domestic operations spanning 1.2 km from one end to other
-A city within, with a super-structure spread over 5.4 million sq ft
-78 aero-bridges, against less than 10 at the current international terminal

-168 check-in counters and 95 immigration desks

NEW DELHI, 25 June 2010: There are a hundred days to go for the start of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. What a lovely day it promises to be, with us assembling at the Wagah Border to receive the Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi from Pakistan after travelling to 69 nations across the Commonwealth over 240 days.

I am particularly excited that we are witnessing the power of sport to be the bridge between societies. Our colleagues in the Pakistan Olympic Association have always offered us great support – helping us in November 2003 to win the bid to host the Games and standing by us through thick and thin, seeing themselves as co-hosts. I am confident therefore that Indo-Pakistan sport will remain an important connect between the peoples of the two great nations.

I am delighted that the baton has completed a remarkable journey over 170,000 kilometres on the international sector from the time it was launched in Buckingham Palace on 29 October 2009 by Queen Elizabeth II in the presence of President Smt. Pratibha Patil. It showcases the capability of the Organising Committee to plan events in great detail and flawlessly execute intricate plans.

The baton has passed through the hands of numerous Heads of State and leaders, ace athletes and common folk. It has been to iconic locations, been to parks that speak out for conservation of flora and fauna in keeping with our resolve to host the first Green Games, been to mountains and desert. It has been exposed to a variety of modes of transport and has encapsuled the diversity of the Commonwealth.

But more importantly, it has demonstrated the remarkable power of sport to unite the Commonwealth since it speaks a universal language. It is a powerful tool that can strengthen social ties and networks, and promotes ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice – all that independent India has stood for and championed actively.

Yes, the baton has been a wonderful harbinger for the glorious city that Delhi is and for the universal message of sport. It has also acted as an ambassador for the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, inviting the athletes from far off lands to come here for the celebrations of the XIX Commonwealth Games. And the roadshows of the Commonwealth Business Club of India held in a number of cities along the way have helped develop possibilities of increased trade ties between India and many Commonwealth nations.

Back home in India, as it covers 20,000 kilometres over the next 100 days, the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi will be a wonderful opportunity for us to instill a greater sense of national pride in ourselves and to promote Olympic sport. We will be able to showcase our cultural diversity, our lifestyle, our democracy, our secularism and everything else that makes up the strong structure of India.

I thank Hero Honda for being the Presenting Partner for the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi. And the Indian Armed Forces, through the Services Sports Control Board, for all the support it is extending to the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi. Without such support, we would not have been able to mount the operation on such a grand scale.

I must also thank the Governments of each State and Union Territory for being an integral part of this massive project that will touch the lives of millions of people. I am sure that the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 can and will be the launching pad for the creation of a greater sense of sports consciousness in the country. I have no doubt that the Queen’s Baton Relay 2010 Delhi will be an exciting event and generate passion for Olympic sport in India.

On this milestone day, with just 100 days to go for the curtain to go up on the biggest sporting spectacle in India, the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 renews it commitment to hosting not just a successful Games but also a grand and memorable one, something that you – and all of Delhi and India – will be proud of. Yes, we know we can do it. We will.

An old farmer in Punjab cherishing the moment by holding Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi

PATHANKOT, 27 June 2010: The Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi has travelled across the land of five rivers – Punjab. Common man got the chance to see, touch and feel the prized baton. From an old farmer in the vast farmlands of the state to its, traditional dancers and martial artists, everyone became the proud Batonbearer. They felt part of the mega-event to be organised in the national capital.

After completing its international leg of journey covering 170,000 kilometres, the baton entered India through the Wagah Border amidst a spectacular ceremony on 25 June 2010.

Next day, the baton left Amritsar (Khasa) Army Cantt for Jallandhar. At Jallandhar baton was welcomed at Hans Raj Maha Vidalya Jallandhar followed by a visit to CRPF divisional Headquarters and a battalion of ITBP. All senior officers of these forces along with other staff were present to greet the baton. Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Rama Mandi and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Academy, Phillaur were the next destinations where-in baton was received by retired and serving police officers. Batonbearers were applauded by garlands and bouquets; their creativity was visible in the way the relay was organised with mounted horses with Bhangra and Gidda performers dancing in front of the Batonbearers. This was the place where Maharaja Ranjit Singh built his magazine to ensure victory over Lahore, and the troops marched towards west to conquer his next destination.

The baton halted at Punjab Agriculture University Ludhiana, immediately after which there was tree plantation. Ms. Alka Lamba accompanied by baton crew planted medicinal plant’s saplings to boost the green revolution. In Ludhiana, the baton visited Bharat Nagar Chowk.

The baton’s next destination was Patiala where the baton was received by famous cricketer, commentator and MP Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu who later joined the relay at Patiala Polo Ground. The sport city had organised a fabulous relay where-in about 20 Arjuna Awardee participated. The relay ended at NIS (National Institute Sports) of Patiala. Here the baton was joined by the community of Patiala for a cultural show followed by dinner.

In Patiala, the prominent Batonbearers were, Mr. Bahadur Singh, Brig. Labh Singh, Mr. Garbax Singh Sanhu, Ms. Rupa Saini (Hockey), Mr. Jugraj Singh (Athletic), Mr. Satbir Singh, Capt. HDS Brar (Car Race), Sub. Sham Singh, Mr. Deepak Patiala, Wg. Cdr. Gurpreet Singh Cheema (Defance Flyer), Mr. Harveen Saroa (Shooting), Mr. Sukchain Sing Cheema (Wrestler), Ms. Sunita Devi (Athletic), Mr. Shudeep Singh (Athletics), Mr. Balkar Singh (Atheletics), Mr. Variender Singh (Boxing), Mr. Gurmukh Singh Sandhu (Wrestling), Mr. Ram Singh (Boxing), Mr. Palwinder Singh Cheema, Mr. Gaganjit Singh, Mr. Shamsher Singh Bhoparai (Volley Ball), Mr. Satnam Sing Maan (Cycling), Mr. Sandeep Kaur (Hockey) and Mr. Jagmohan Singh (Athletic).

On 27 June 2010, the baton visited Pathankot in north Punjab. The baton is heading towards Kashmir Valley via Jammu.

XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Executive Management Members

This is a four-member committee headed by the Chairman and includes the Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary General. It is the main executive arm of the Executive Board and works as an interface between the sub-committees on one hand and the Executive Board on the other.

It is responsible for finalising the Functional Area (FA) plans and budgets submitted by the sub-committees and FAs and passing them onto the Executive Board. It is also responsible for day-to-day decisions and approvals to facilitate the smooth functioning of the OC CWG Delhi 2010. It supervises the operations of the sub-committees.

Shera - The Mascot

Shera, mascot of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, is the most visible face of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. His name comes from the Hindi word Sher – meaning tiger. Shera truly represents the modern Indian. He is an achiever with a positive attitude, a global citizen but justifiably proud of his nation’s ancient heritage, a fierce competitor but with integrity and honesty. Shera is also a ‘large-hearted gentleman’ who loves making friends and enthusing people to ‘come out and play’.

In Indian mythology, the tiger is associated with Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti (or female power) and the vanquisher of evil. She rides her powerful vehicle – the tiger – into combat, especially in her epic and victorious battle against Mahishasur, a dreaded demon.

Come Out and Play: The logo tagline is in an invitation to every person across all divides – Indian and Commonwealth - to let go of themselves and participate in the Games to the best of their abilities, in the true sprit of the Games. It is an exhortation to them to set new records, to outperform, and to raise the bar by scaling new peaks of achievement. It is also a call to the people of India, especially Delhi, to come out in support of the Games and play the perfect hosts at the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.

Colour Palette: The colour palette for the Delhi 2010 look programme combines two of the distinctive colours of the Delhi 2010 Emblem with the official colours of the Commonwealth Games.

Green: The colour that signifies life, energy and high spirits also represents the fact that Delhi 2010 will be the firstever Green Games. With a spring in your step, face every challenge and overcome hurdles with radiance and gusto.

Purple: Combining the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical qualities of pink, this colour satisfies the need for reassurance, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement.

Red, Yellow & Blue: Commonwealth Games colours, representing the ‘Trinity of Values’ that symbolise the games; unifying Humanity (Red) giving all athletes a chance to realise their Destiny (Yellow) and promoting Equality (Blue).

Pink: This colour has also been introduced to the palette adding an element of surprise and luxury to the Games look programme. It plays to the crowd and truly reflects India in all its resplendent glory.

Over the next few days, the best athletes from the nations and territories of the Commonwealth will showcase their talent and competitive skills in 17 disciplines in venues that have been designed to bring out the best in them. You will see the pursuit of excellence and share the agony and ecstasy of human endeavour.

MESSAGE FROM COMMONWEALTH GAMES FEDERATION PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Commonwealth Games Federation and the athletes of the Commonwealth I welcome you all to Delhi and to the XIX Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games holds a unique place in the sporting world and represents the most visible manifestation of the Commonwealth in action, in Delhi we will see approximately 6,500 athletes and officials from 71 Nations and Territories competing across an exciting 17 sport programme between October 3 – 14, 2010. Representing two billion people the athletes of the Commonwealth will enjoy a unique experience in Delhi with its rich culture and heritage blended with first-class sporting facilities. The Commonwealth Games brings together the many faiths, races, cultures and traditions from Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and Oceania uniting the Commonwealth through sport.
I welcome all members of the media to share in our celebrations as the Commonwealth’s most populist nation hosts the Games, you undertake the important role of reporting the Games across the Commonwealth. You will enjoy first-class facilities, witness memorable competitions, record world, regional and national records and tell many a story of human endeavour both on and off the field of play thus capturing and reported on the friendly Games into millions of homes across the Commonwealth.

XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi are scheduled from 3 October to 14 October, 2010. This is the best time to travel to Delhi, which has average daytime temperatures of 22°C (71.5°F) in October. You can visit many of Delhi’s numerous heritage sites and monuments, sample world class cuisine and entertainment at the city’s numerous hotels and restaurants, shop till you drop at the various malls and shopping outlets the city provides, and experience all that this vibrant, exciting city has to offer.
Delhi is located a few hours away from the world’s greatest monument to love, the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra. Also close by is the colourful state of Rajasthan with its forts and palaces, tales of valour, and unbeatable exotic experiences. The sheer scale and diversity of India offers a range of destinations and experiences found nowhere else in the world: the mystical and breathtaking Himalayas in the north; vast beaches with an exciting range of water sports and other activities; peaceful lagoons and inland waterways; yoga and meditation to lift your spirits; wildlife parks to commune with nature; and ancient heritage sites to remind you of India’s ancient past. The Accommodation Functional Area (FA), Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi (OC CWG Delhi 2010) in conjunction with the Games Travel Office (GTO) has secured a comprehensive range of hotel accommodation in and around Delhi exclusively for visitors who will travel to Delhi for the Games.
